There are moments in life when we are provided the comfort and safety to experience a true, genuine connection.
We're here to share a personal, comprehensive approach to the treatment and assessment of clients and their needs.Meet us
Chelsea Bartel, PhD, LP, HSP-P
We're all this together, exploring the highs and lows in life and growing through our experiences. It's an honor to work you, your child, and your family. I believe that therapy and assessment are most effective when we partner together for change.
I grew up in Kansas and graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Psychology. I then pursued graduate studies at Washburn University, earning a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology before moving to study at North Carolina State University, earning a PhD in School Psychology. I've put down roots in North Carolina and am happy to raise my two young children here with such abundant nature, diversity, culture, and food!
My training allowed me to work in a broad range of settings including a center for children recovering from abuse and neglect, an urban community mental health center, university-based therapy and assessment clinics, an in-home support service for teen parents, and public schools throughout the Piedmont. My degrees in different speciality areas reflect the importance I place on using evidence-based practices in therapy and assessment, as well as meeting high standards for professional practice.
I have a special interest and training in psychological assessment and evaluation, and I take a whole-person approach to evaluation. That is, I consider the person within the context of family history, current stressors, academic or work environment, and individual strengths when completing an evaluation for diagnostic or educational planning purposes. I have considerable experience in schools and I am happy to partner with families as they navigate the Special Education referral, evaluation, and placement process (including the development of Individualized Education Plans - IEPs).
I am also certified in the assessment and treatment of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMAD), often known as "Postpartum Depression" and related issues. I received this specialized training and certification from Postpartum Support International (PSI), and I engage in ongoing training in this area. I enjoy partnering with women, men, and families as they navigate the ups and downs associated with conception, pregnancy, labor and delivery, and adjusting to parenthood.

Welcome! However you found me - I'm so glad you are interested in therapy as it can be a truly rewarding and healing experience. I work with children (ages 3 and up), adolescents, adults, and families. I specialize in play therapy, individual, group and family therapy. Molly, my canine four legged co-therapist, also provides assistance with unconditional acceptance and is usually present in sessions.
I graduated from the University of North Carolina with a BA in psychology. Prior to beginning work on my Master's, I was heavily involved in research. I led and coordinated multiple efforts at UNC assessing the efficacy of different interventions on the emotional health of children.
Those experiences drew me towards work as a Clinical Social Worker, because I saw that properly executed, evidence-based interventions could truly benefit the emotional health of children. I obtained my Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2004 with a concentration on children and families.
One of the most important things about me and my therapeutic approach is that I am relationship-based. That means that the relationship you form with the therapist is one of acceptance, warmth, connection, and no fear of judgement.
As a Registered Play Therapist, I specialize in working with children ages 3 and up. My orientation is focused on attachment and strengthening the relationship the child has with important people in their lives. I also specialize in working with children whose parents are separating/divorcing/and/or involved in the litigation process. Other areas of expertise are grief, anxiety, depression, and strengthening the parent-child relationship.
With adolescents and adults I can assist you in the process of healing and finding peace in your life. I have experience helping with anxiety, depression, and related issues.

We bring a whole-person approach to each individual client. The foundation of therapy rests upon a strong relationship between the individual or family and the therapist.
